My good friend Andrew Dobbie took this shot of Iona on New Year’s Day. It was the first picture he managed to take without her crying, as she was frightened of the camera at first (it is a big, scary beast of a camera with a very bright flash). I love this picture because you can see the new-found confidence in her eyes – it’s like she’s saying ‘you can’t scare me anymore stoopid camera’ but she’s still a little unsure. It’s incredible watching her experience new sensations and discover new objects in the world around her – it makes you realise how critical these early months are in a child’s development.
